“English in my life and in your life” – “Ingles em minha vida e na sua vida”

I want to tell you about how I decided to learn English and about how I’m still learning more and more each and every day.  I have studied English since Kindergarten way back in elementary school.  It was just another subject at the time and I studied at least twice a week.  My family couldn’t afford a private school or tutor so that I could study more.  But that was ok because I didn’t really like English at that time anyways.

After high school, around age 17, I decided to take an English class because I started enjoying the language more.  I studied at a few different schools until I found one with a methodology I could relate to.  Even though it made sense of the material I was learning, it was still very hard!

When I finished college I got frustrated because I didn’t find a job right away.  So I decided to study English abroad because it was always my dream.  I found out through a childhood friend about the Au Pair Exchange Program.

Finally I got a chance to live in the state of Georgia, in the United States for 21 wonderful months.  The first 3 months were really tough because my English was very limited at the time.  I could understand everything people were saying to me, but I couldn’t always respond back because I’d get stuck on a lot of different words. 

When we learn English in Brazil, the difficult thing is actually “speaking” English, because we have very few chances to practice it.  That’s why I had a hard time at first, because I didn’t even try “the few things” we have, silly me!

What are “the few things”? Movies… do you like English-speaking movies? Do you watch it with dubbing? If your answer is YES you’re not going to learn much English like that.  You HAVE to watch with the captions on for your language, but pay attention to the spoken English.  It’s one of the greatest ways to learn English, even if your favorite artist is performing.

Quero dizer a vocês sobre como eu decidi aprender Inglês e sobre como eu
ainda estou aprendendo mais e mais a cada dia. Estudei Inglês desde pre-escola.  Era apenas outro assunto no momento e eu estudei pelo menos duas vezes por semana. Minha família não podia pagar uma escola privada ou professor particular para que eu pudesse estudar mais. Mas isso foi ok, porque eu não gostava muito de Inglês naquela epoca de qualquer maneira.

Depois do ensino médio, aos 17 anos, eu decidi entrar numa escola de Inglês, porque eu comecei a gostar mais da língua. Eu estudei em algumas escolas diferentes até encontrar uma com a metodologia da qual eu me relacionava. Mas ainda era muito dificil.

Quando terminei a faculdade eu fiquei frustrada porque eu não arrumei um
emprego logo. Então eu decidi estudar Inglês no exterior, porque sempre foi meu sonho. Descobri através de uma amiga de infância sobre o Programa de Intercâmbio Au Pair.

Finalmente eu tive a oportunidade de viver no estado da Geórgia, nos Estados Unidos por 21 maravilhosos meses . Os primeiros três meses foram muito difíceis, porque o meu Inglês era muito limitado no tempo. Eu podia entender tudo que as pessoas estavam dizendo para mim, mas eu não poderia responder sempre de volta, porque eu ia ficava presa em um monte de palavras diferentes.

Quando aprendemos Inglês, no Brasil, a coisa mais difícil de fixar e o "falar" Inglês, porque temos muitas poucas chances de praticá-lo. É por isso que eu tive dificuldade no começo, porque eu nem sequer tentei "as poucas coisas" que temos, boba eu!

O que são "as poucas coisas"? Filmes ... você gosta de filmes em ingles? Você o vê com dublagem? Se sua resposta foi SIM, você não vai aprender muito Inglês assim. Você TEM que assistir com as legendas com o seu idioma, mas preste atenção para o Inglês falado. É uma das melhores maneiras de aprender Inglês, mesmo se o seu artista favorito está realizando.

Satisfeita, eu não quero fazer os meus posts muito longos por isso vou continuar "as poucas coisas", no próximo post.

English Teacher - Professora de Ingles

Hello everyone!!

Here I am again.  I'll try to keep the blog updated.  I'm new at this way of sharing stuff.

Well, I want to talk a little bit about how my life has been lately.  As you can see, I'm an English teacher in Brazil  (BTW If you see any grammatical errors in my blog, please tell me, I'd appreciate it).  I have a Social Work degree, but I decided to be a teacher for awhile because I could practice my English. Fortunately, I fell in love with this profession.  Everyday is a new challenge because each student has their own way of learning. It's wonderful in my opinion.

Soon I'll post more English tips here. I have done a lot of research since I became a teacher. There are too many things that I want to share with you all.  There will be more blogging, I will share songs with you, cultural games, learning exercises and much more.

Ola a todos...


Aqui estou de novo... Vou tentar manter a atualização do blog. Eu sou novo neste mundo dos blogs. Bem... Eu quero falar um pouco sobre como minha vida tem sido ultimamente. Como você pode ver sou professora de Inglês no Brasil (BTW Se você ver qualquer gramática ou qualquer coisa errada aqui, por favor me diga, eu aprecio isso). Eu tenho diploma de Servico Social, mas eu decidi ser professora por um tempo porque eu poderia praticar o meu Inglês. Felizmente eu me apaixonei por esta profissão. Todo dia é um novo desafio, cada estudante tem as suas próprias dúvidas, sua maneira de aprender. É maravilhoso, na minha opinião.

Em breve vou postar um monte de dicas de Inglês aqui. Tenho feito muitas pesquisas desde que me tornei professora. Há muitas coisas que quero compartilhar com você, aluno ou professor. Entre muitas outras coisas, blogs, músicas, jogos, exercícios e etc

Networking - Rede

"A professional network service (or, in an internet context, simply professional network) is a type of social network service that is focused solely on interactions and relationships of a business nature rather than including personal, nonbusiness interactions." Wikipedia.

So, is networking a professional service?  It can be if you are using Facebook, Orkut, Linked-in or other social networks to find people that you are interested in keeping contact with.  These websites are made for this exact purpose.

But, if you go to a bakery to buy your bread and milk, and happen to have some business cards with you in your pocket, you can give it to someone you meet if they are interested in your services.  Then, that person can recommend you to another person or give them one of your business cards.  The cycle can continue, similar to the viral marketing seen online with programs like YouTube.  This is one of the most effective low cost and often times no-cost ways to advertise.

It sounds like it is easy doesn't it?  You have to start small and it will build like a snowball rolling down a steep hill.  Start with business cards.  Do you have any now?  Have you ever thought about it before?  I did 3 months ago and it has proven to be a very worthwhile investment.  I got a return on my investment in the first month!! This is clearly a necessity for anyone in business today.

There are no secrets here.  Give someone a business card, they will give it to another and then one day you'll be all over the WORLD!
I know, I know... You must be asking yourself, "Why is Ariana writing about networking?" So I will answer you. "Because networking just came into my life recently and has helped me a lot.  I wanted to share my thoughts about life, love, English and learning through this blog."  Think of it as my journal to share with the world.  But you won't get all the good stuff... some of that stays with me and my penguin.  You know who you are..

Networking: "Um serviço de rede profissional (ou, no contexto da Internet, basta rede profissional) é um tipo de serviço de rede social que está focado apenas em interações e relações de natureza empresarial e não incluindo as interações pessoais, não comerciais." Wikipedia.Então, é networking um serviço profissional? Pode ser, se voce estiver usando Facebook, Orkut, Likedin ou outra rede social para encontrar pesoas/ grupos do seu interesse. Estes Websites são feitos para isso.

Mas se você vai a uma padaria, comprar o seu pão e seu leite, com o seu cartão de visita no bolso, e talvez dê para alguém, e então essa pessoa vai dar a outra pessoa, e assim por diante ... você simplesmente começou seu networking.Parece fácil, não é? Você tem que começar com uma coisa: seu cartão de visita. Você tem um? Você já pensou em ter um? Você deve tentar. Eu só tentei 3 meses atrás e funcionou muito bem, e ainda funciona.
Não há segredos: cartão de visita -> pessoa -> uma outra pessoa ->....-> e MUNDO!

Eu sei, eu sei ... Aposto que você deve estar se perguntando: "Por que Ariana esta escrevendo sobre networking?" E eu te respondo: "Porque o networking apenas entrou na minha vida, me ajudou muito e quero compartilhar meus pensamentos / vida / inglês / conhecimentos, através deste blog"
